{"id":66,"date":"2014-10-02T09:04:29","date_gmt":"2014-10-02T14:04:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oddlysincere.com\/?p=66"},"modified":"2025-02-14T21:59:02","modified_gmt":"2025-02-15T03:59:02","slug":"how-fast-technology-moves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oddlysincere.com\/?p=66","title":{"rendered":"How fast technology moves"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I had a bit of a double-take this morning that I wanted to share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first computer I used (an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apple_IIe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple IIe<\/a>) had 64 <em>kilo<\/em>bytes of RAM (actually, I guess it&#8217;s <em>technically<\/em> more correct to write <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Byte#Multiple-byte_units\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>kibi<\/em>bytes<\/a>). The densest permanent storage I had access to were <em>single-sided<\/em> 5.25-inch floppy disks (I remember feeling <em>quite<\/em> proud when I got my first &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Double-sided_disk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notcher<\/a>&#8221; which allowed me to put a professional-looking write-protect notch on the <em>other<\/em> side). I had to look up the exact number, but the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apple_DOS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple DOS<\/a> 3.3 format stored 140KiB per side of a 5.25-inch floppy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>This morning, I did a double-take when I realized that I could store a 444 <em>mega<\/em>byte (<em>mebi<\/em>byte, actually) file on my <em>hard drive<\/em> without having to be concerned <em>at all<\/em> about the space consumed (it used <em>less than 0.1% of the total storage on the drive<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s a comparison to give you an idea how far <em>mass-produced, <\/em><em>consumer-level<\/em> technology has come in 30 years. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had a bit of a double-take this morning that I wanted to share.
