{"id":175,"date":"2015-09-12T01:23:24","date_gmt":"2015-09-12T06:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oddlysincere.com\/?p=175"},"modified":"2025-02-14T21:59:02","modified_gmt":"2025-02-15T03:59:02","slug":"individual-versus-structural-racism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oddlysincere.com\/?p=175","title":{"rendered":"Individual versus structural racism"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I read <a href=\"http:\/\/everydayfeminism.com\/2015\/08\/white-america-responsibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this post<\/a> tonight, and it does a pretty good job of explaining something I&#8217;ve tried to describe before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s two <em>very<\/em> relevant quotes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A fundamental, but very challenging part of my work is moving white people from an individual understanding of racism \u2014 i.e. only some people are racist and those people are bad \u2014 to a structural understanding.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The two most effective beliefs that prevent us (whites) from seeing racism as a system are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>that racists are bad people, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>that racism is conscious dislike.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jmcclure\/posts\/10207144862962672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">written&nbsp;before<\/a> that discrimination doesn&#8217;t&nbsp;<em>start<\/em> with people using fire hoses on each other. &nbsp;<em>Bad&nbsp;intent<\/em>&nbsp;<strong>isn&#8217;t<\/strong> a necessary condition for the existence of racism (or sexism, or any other kind of discrimination).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I read this post tonight, and it does a pretty good job of explaining something I&#8217;ve tried to describe before.
